On 7 October, SaxoCell invites the public to a citizen forum on cell and gene therapies at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden. Experts from medicine and research will provide accessible insights into current therapeutic approaches and discuss their opportunities, risks and wider societal implications with the audience.
Cells as medicines? Changing genes to treat serious diseases? What may sound like the medicine of the future is already a reality in some areas. Cell and gene therapies are opening up new possibilities for treating serious diseases – while at the same time raising new questions for medicine and society.
How much risk would we be willing to accept for a novel therapy? Where does treatment end and enhancement begin? Whom do we trust when we hear about medical “breakthroughs”? And how can fair access be ensured when therapies are complex and expensive?
These are the questions at the heart of the SaxoCell® citizen forum ZUGEHÖRT!, taking place on 7 October 2026 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden. The evening will begin with short films and accessible insights into current approaches in cell and gene therapy from experts in medicine and research. One of the experts joining us is Prof. Dr. med. Martin Wermke, oncologist and expert in CAR T-cell therapies at University Hospital Dresden and NCT/UCC Dresden. A further scientific perspective will come from the field of Medical Systems Biology at TU Dresden.
The audience will then be invited to take part: at themed discussion tables, participants will explore and weigh different perspectives on expectations and trust, risks and limits, as well as access and public participation. There will be space for different perspectives, individual questions and an open, constructive exchange.
No prior knowledge is required and participation is free of charge. Please note that the event will be held in German. Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks will be available throughout the evening.
